Founded in 1969, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) is a non-profit civil rights organization dedicated to ending size discrimination in all of its forms. NAAFA's goal is to help build a society in which people of every size are accepted with dignity and equality in all aspects of life. NAAFA will pursue this goal through advocacy, public education, and support.
How we view overweight and obesity
Everyone is different and all people will have their own size, their own look. Changing how people feel about larger people is personal but reflects how we react to them and how we interact with them. You may be overweight yourself and see someone larger than yourself, it could trigger the same perceptions one would have looking at you.
The way we react and feel about obesity and the growing norms of waistlines is cultural. We have so much influence from the media, we view obesity as unhealthy and something should be done about it.
What do we do?
Are we justified to judge?
What influences our feelings?
Billions are spent on weight loss products and programs each year, yet society is getting bigger. Maybe there is something wrong here, a new way to thinking might be in order.
